Shane, you ROCK! Say it like it is. I so admire that, which is evident by the many years I’ve worked with Prof. Brian Peskin. you’re both brutal… but the world vitally NEEDS guys like you! THANK YOU!!!

It all sounds great. I don’t have a thyroid and I eat whole grain Kashi or Ezekiel for breakfast. Is that making me fat? I lost my thyroid to cancer and struggle daily with my weight. I have given up because none of the information out there is consistent. I eat healthy foods, as much organic as I can, and I try to avoid sugar as much as possible. But still no change in my weight which came on after years of starving my thryoid (no medication w/out a thyroid) to test for more cancer. Now no more cancer…but my body is 45 pounds heavier and the fatigue is incredible. Instead of criticizing people like me, how about giving some great ideas for breakfast without having to sell a book to do it. Most of the information out there, even what is given by dietitians sounds wrong. As an unemployed teacher, I feel duped by all the medical world. Who do you trust anymore. The one who wants your money?? I need healthy cost effective choices…or is it that maybe why many Americans choose to be fat cows….the cost of good health products like yours and others is so outrageous the average joe can’t afford them while raising and feeding a family. I am intrigued by you but you offered no CURE or solution. SO what is your idea for a great breakfast?

  3. Sharon Nusunginya

I just have to make a comment. My thyroid has been inactive for many years even though I ate properly with healthy, organic foods and none of the sodas or doughnuts! I also had gained over 100 pounds eating 300 fewer calories than necessary every day in an effort to keep my weight in check!

Two years ago I had a massive stroke and spent the next 2 1/2 months between 4 different hospitals. I am still not able to walk on my own.

I had studied nutrition for many years and helped other people but could not help myself until I finally gave up meats and all dairy. I have now lost 50+ pounds.

I am primarily an 85% raw vegan but have about 15% lightly cooked foods. About once a month I do eat a small portion of salmon.

Sometimes, thyroid problems are caused by stress also. I had/have been under tremendous stress for many years. I used some natural supplements and use seaweed daily in my green smoothies for additional iodine.

I am studying to become an online health coach to help others.

Oh no! I better hurry and get everyone more free information before they inflate to themselves to the moon!

1 out of 3 born from year 2000 will have metabolic syndrome. So, thank you Shane for giving a jolt of reality that people need to take responsibility for the Land of the Obese. That’s right..we used to be Land of the Free but now most are Americans are so fat they are bankrupting our diseasecare system and use every excuse in the book to account for their atrocious bodies! Sometimes the truth hurts that is all that Shane is trying to say.

  6. Dawn

My doctors say I am in the beginning stages of Grave’s Disease (sometimes my thyroid levels are high and somethimes they are low). I won’t go on meds until the day that I can’t physically function. I have cut out the cereal, soda, juice as well as the doughnuts, brownies, and cookies! I have eggs for breafast or Shane’s protein mix when I’m short on time. I’m walking on a treadmill or outside even on days when I don’t feel like it and I’ve lost 20 pounds so far. Quit complaining, suck it up, and put that energy into doing something physical.

Most people don’t think about the fact that their diet and lifestyle choices affect not only themselves, but their family members who may have to carry their fat diabetic, heart bypassed ass to the finish line.

Also, taxpayers, through the disease care systems like Medicaid, will have to pay for their meds, scooter, electric bed, wheelchair, therapy, doctor visits, and much more.

We are all connected not just by our common biology and our humanity, but financially via our personal nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Taking personal responsibility for our own health and well being is the only sustainable answer for our nation’s health care dilemma.

I’m speaking from my personal experience. I have a “sick mom, well dad”. My dad is nearly 80 years old, flies airplanes, still works, and his doctor recently told him he has the prostate of a 17 year old. Over the years he has eaten well, exercised, and would only go to a doctor or a hospital if something was falling off or he needed stiches for a wound.

My dear mom over the years has eaten snack cakes, donuts, ice cream, deep fried foods, drank tons of soda, and not exercised. Now the family is literally carrying her ass down the road to the finish line. She is obese, diabetic, has had triple bypass surgery, sits in a chair all day watching Wheel of Fortune, and has to have her ass wiped and her diaper changed.

Well dad, sick mom, is the result of personal choices over time. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Our country needs the reality checks as administered by Shane Ellison. We don’t need to be coddled by the Dr. Oz’s, the Sanjay Gupta’s, and the like.

These lovable white coats have one foot in the natural camp, and the other in the pharmaceutical sector. Their information is sugarcoated and sanitized for mass consumption and “drug friendliness”.

They would never say “Fat Cow Hall of Fame” because it would be too real, a bitter pill for the masses to swallow. Yet this is what we really need. Enough coddling!

Dawn, way to go! Im happy you have refused to accept medical excuses and take action.

Congrats on your 20lbs of weight loss. The Whey Advanced provides amino acids that serve as building blocks to your fat burning and anti-aging hormones. That is what being a hormone intelligence HIT woman is all about - refusing excuses and taking action! Way to go.

Thanks to everyone else who had such great, insightful things to say.

  9. gina

I used to be one of those donut eaters complaining (or atleast wondering) about my thyroud. Losing my gallbladder was the event that finally woke me up. I now lost 40lbs + and feeling great - still have another 50 to go though :)
Shane - please help - even after removing my gallbladder I keep forming stones over and over in the bile ducts. I was told I have high cholesterol and I need to take medicines because it’s genetics and lifestyle changes won’t make a difference. I refused the meds and with healthy lifestyle I dropped over 40 points of total cholesterol. My triglycerides are still very high and according to my doctor that’s why I form stones still. I am taking stone dissolving medicines and that seems to stop the problem. Is there anything natural equivalent to these medicines (urso) ??? Should I stop it?? Does high triglyceride level cause the stones to form still? I can’t have any more endoscopies to remove them so I’m afraid to stop the urso but I also don’t like the idea of taking meds at age 30. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Great advice Shane!I agree with Chuck…people really need a wake up call here…it is not OK to be fat, and I am so glad you are telling it like it REALLY is! I hope your site blows up so people can really start getting the message… I was at a Rockies game the other day, and I was getting so disgusted to watch all these people eat all this nasty food-hot dogs, bratwurst, french fries, sodas, cotton candy, nachos, cracker jack, etc. This isn’t even real food people! I swear some of these people go to the game just to eat this crap…So much for calling Colorado the “fittest” state…after witnessing this, I have a hard time believing! I am 5′4, weigh 125 lbs, and believe me maintaining my weight is not easy! I eat right, watch my calories, and work out HARD 6 days a week…there is no short cut for this! I don’t eat crap-EVER! For those of you struggling with your weight-get real…stop eating so much and work out harder…I watched the finale of the Biggest Loser last night, and this show proves it is not genetics, etc. that keep you fat. Every single person on that show has lost weight…some with severe medical problems…These are the fattest people in the country, and they did it by working out hard and watching their diet…! If these people can do it, there is no excuse for anyone else! And, stop asking for more free advice…we are lucky to get any free advice here, and I am sure Shane needs to make a living like the rest of us!

  11. fatcow

I had a great figure for years but then I got huge and the docs treated me with your fat cow slovenly sloth attitude that you are projecting. As a result I stayed fat and almost died because they wanted to call my fat a behavior problem and sent me to psych! Turned out I had a tumor on my adrenal gland. It is called Cushings disease. Subsequently I cured my thyroid with Bach Flower Remedies but even as a raw foodist I cannot help but be a fat cow. I am currently battling high blood pressure that is not responding to any natural means that I have tried so far. You may have a wonderful product for me but since you called me a fat cow and assume that I have eating behaviors that I do not have - you demonstrate a sexist chauvinist ignorant attitude that shows me that you do not have the intricate knowledge of the body necessary to understand how to help me, therefore I do not have the confidence in you to try your product. You show me the same ignorance and hatefulness as the allopaths who almost killed me. You can also remove me from your mailing list.

  12. CED

Excellent video, Shane! People are people, so the excuse makers are to be expected. I hate (but not really) to sound judgmental, but the UNemployed teacher asking for more handouts and the “fatcow” blaming everyone else for her weight problems need to get off the couch and stop looking for a magic cure. By the way, Cushings disease is most likely to affect those that are already obese and have type 2 diabetes. Lay off the simple carbs and actually do some sweating during your exercise routines…that is if you have one.

  13. Chuck

    Fat Cow,

Your medical condition represents an infitessimally small portion of obese America.

Numbers posted in 2009 by the National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 34 percent of Americans are obese, and 32.7 percent are overweight. It is these 80 million “plus Americans” that Shane is addressing in his blogs and health education, not those with medical anomalies like you.

Isn’t it better to err on the side of prevention and good health, to even employ insult as a tool for cutting through the deception, clutter and bullshit?

The message needs to be delivered efffectively…sans caution, reservation and political correctness.

    Chuck

  14. Dr. Cynthia

    Shane,

I have always been an advocate of your website, but will now refrain from suggesting it to anyone. I host a national/international health call weekly, and have pointed hundreds of people to your website. As a practitioner of alternative medicine for over 27 years, and a clinical nutritionist, I can tell you that your simple, and somewhat hurtful explanation of thyroid issues is not at all accurate. Yes, some people complain of thyroid issues while continuing to consume junk food, but many people have “true thyroid conditions” that certainly would not qualify for suggesting that they become members of the “fat cow hall of fame”. Shame on you. You are far too intelligent to record this type of video. I am hoping that you have not allowed your success to overshadow your common sense. Did you ever consider the fact that you had your daughter record this video? What kind of an impression are you leaving with her regarding overweight people? What kind of a role model are you? It is a incontrovertible fact that children are impressionable, and usually emulate their parents viewpoint.
Next time you decide to broach a subject with condemnation, you might want to research it further, before you embarrass yourself.

    Dr. Cynthia

I told a friend the very same thing last week. He wanted to eat
DIET ICE CREAM WHILE ATTEMPTING TO GET OUT OF THE FAT COW HALL OF
FAME!!! I hope he listens but I do not think he will. I am a RD
student at EMU and I believe pretty much what you preach. Keep
up the good work and stay true to the truth.

Polarizaation. This is what gets people thinking. I love it. For instance, Lora found that JAMA predicts that 1 out 3 children born in 2000 will be fat cows thanks to insulin resistance. My kids won’t be among these grazing the candy isle. Sadly, these diabetic kids won’t have a chance to be cool. They will be blanketed in fat. And fat isn’t cool. I learned it first hand.

Polarization. It can also show how thinking is a lost art, as some people don’t do it really well. For instance, Dr. Cynthia asks, what kind of role model am I? Hmmm…A skinny one (I thought that was apparent. Guess I’ll do it with my shirt off next time). And FYI, there is no such thing as "alternative medicine," only medicine. Look for my new book - coming to stores in October - on this subject. It will have tons of real medicine and show you where to get in your town - no matter where you live!

Cushings disease is a consequence not a cause of obesity.  The only way to conquer it and all the other complications of obesity is hormone intelligence, which I teach in The AM-PM Fat Loss Discovery pacakge.  All of this is well documented.

The latest pandering to America’s obsession with eating junk food is the new bestselling book “Eat This, Not That: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution”. On the cover we see the recommendation to eat a McDonalds Big Mac, rather than a Burger King Whopper.

The publisher should have named the book “Eat Shit Not Crap: The No-Effort Life Loss Solution”.

    Chuck

  19. Sue

Shane I know a lot of people use their thyroid as an excuse for not being able to lose weight. These people are probably not even trying or are eating high-carb, low-fat, low-protein.

Are you saying that people with legitimate low-thyroid tests should not be on thyroxine? Will the right diet get the thyroid working efficiently again? What about certain deficiencies that may be causing a low thyroid function?

  20. Micki Jacobs

I take offense at your comments because you are so myopic. I am hypothyroid and have always been thin, even at my worst I was thin, and without treatment, my mood, my skin and hair and nails, and other pertinent aspects of my life are terribly affected. I never had a weight issue…only a thyroid/adrenal issue. So does my size 2 daughter who is also hypothyroid. So please recognize that you are painting with a “too broad” brush and you have little empathy for people.

  21. Mia

I found the video to be very truthful. If we all begin to eat “LIVE” foods, organic healthy foods, GOD’S foods only — then we would all be so much better off and healthier. But I must say that you must not make such “broad” statements like that, since there are many other factors that disrupt the thyroid gland, those are called “endocrine disruptors” and they are literally everywhere, they are chemicals found in our water, in our air, cleaning products, lotions, shampoos, soaps, sprays, and in our foods as well. So food is not the only culprit here.

Also, Mercury — as found in mercury fillings is a HUGE thyroid basher!! I am living proof of that. Mercury in our teeth, ie: fillings, and mercury in the flu shots, and mercury everywhere can majorly disrupt the endocrine system.

You can read a book written by a chemist and scientist called “Amalgam illness” his name is Andy Cutler and he is brilliant, and his book helped me a lot. My thyroid was bad due to mercury (high amounts) found in my teeth and in my body and brain.

So please don’t say that it’s all what we eat, because it’s not, I have been organic and eating healthy for a while now and only thyroid meds (a natural one– called Armour) helped me lose the weight.

    Now I am 121 pounds.

    Mia

  22. Dawn

Not to change the subject, but I must comment on the mercury post. A few years ago I had an old mercury filling replaced with the “latest,” “greatest,” “safest” tooth color filling material. I experienced pain on that side of my mouth for a year, underwent x-rays and various tests, and my doctors and the dental underlings earned my mistrust about the time they all decided it was in my head. My saving grace was when the dentist’s other patients started complaining about the same reaction! If it were an option, I’d go back to mercury fillings in a heartbeat.

    Shane,
As for what you’re teaching your daughter, it’s sounds pretty similar to what I’m teaching my son…
don’t be confused by people who say, “they can’t” when what they mean to say is, “they won’t”!

  23. Tonia

A lot of what you say about eating habits and blaming ‘being fat’ on something is correct but you must be aware that resechers now realize that many people with thyroid disease test negative for it and that the % of people with it is much larger than thought.

It took me years to get diagnosed because blood work says no problem but I do have thyroid and was proven by luck. It was ruining my life. Just be careful that you don’t paint everyone with the same brush for sensationalism. Because you are respected, you have to be that much more concerned with how people who trust you will take your information. It is never all or nothing.

You probably totally turned off alot of people who actually have thyroid problems but are not diagnosed and you probably go through to others that they can’t use excuses - they have to accept the blame for themselves.

I’m just asking you be careful in the presentation of things.

  24. gina

I think what Shane meant was the people who complain about their thyroids and at the same time they’re still eating high calorie/high sugar foods…not the ones who have real thryoid disease - even when they follow ideally healthy eating habits. I know the thyroid panel tests are imperfect (hubby is a medtech..) but I think we need to try to change all our eating and exercising habits and if things don’t improve then start to look for real and valid health problems..Those exist and many people struggle with those but as long as one eats bad..you just can’t say it for 100%.

  25. J.Cox

I have met so many who complain of their weight but do nothing about it and continue eating the processed junk called “food”. They are willfully ignorant, refuse to get educated and when they do come down with a plethora of illnesses (usually chronic), they continue the “pitty me” attitude and want everyone to feel sorry for them. Having compassion is one thing but enabling the “victim” mentality is another. We are either victims or survivors…..which one do you want to be?

As far as hypothyroidism goes, I just discovered I have that (which would explain my adrenal crash a few years ago). I know I have a metabolic issue as my body temps are averaging 96.0-97.0! There is much to be learned at www.stopthethyroidmadness.com. I also highly suggest dessicated thyroid (like Armour) and as much education as you can get.

Shane, your program is amazing! I recommend the AM/PM to everyone I know struggling with their weight as a result of poor lifestyle choices (intentional or not). As soon as my baby is done nursing, I WILL be on your program!!! I know it changes lives for the better. Truth is truth wherever you find it….even if the delivery isn’t sugar-coated (pardon the pun!!haha)

  26. Heidi

    Lory from May 12

what about an egg scramble? saute some onion, bell pepper and mushrooms, then pour a couple of whisked eggs over that and cook…put a couple of slices of avocado on top, and enjoy!

  27. KM

This a great topic but I have two other suggestions for you, that both touch this area as well. PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and hysterectomy and most importantly oophorectomy. Women lose their ovaries and synthetic HRT does not work and causes all kinds of awful problems. I have lost my gallbladder since taking HRT. I don’t now but I’m in hormone hell. Bioidenticals also arent’ the easy answer. It is very hard to get this correctly balanced. Thousands of women are suffering but no one is talking about oophorectomies and what that really does and how to cope with it. We get told to take HRT and SSRI. We deserve better.

  28. Nicole

The message is right, but the tone here is really, really wrong. Insulting people with weight problems will only decrease your rapport & credibility with the very people who need your assistance the most, Shane. I’m trying to glean all the information I can from your website. Much of it is good, but some of your statements are unnecessarily hurtful (”fat cow hall of fame” “fatass hall of fame”), and make me skeptical about your true intentions. Your taunts go beyond mere eshewing of political correctness - they are mean-spirited, and mirror the very “shaming” tactics the diet industry has been relying on for years to lure in hapless consumers. People are not overweight because they are stupid, or lazy, or suffer from character flaws. They are overweight because they have been duped their entire lives - just like YOU were duped by Eli Lilly into thinking YOU were doing the right thing. So please, attempt to show a little more consideration for people who haven’t got it all figured out yet. You’ll help a lot more people if you do.

  29. Suzanne

I read everything that people have written and I watched this video. I can’t believe that someone who say that, but I really needed to hear that from someone. I have been told that I need medications to take care of my “thyroid problem” recently. I am going to have to refuse now. I have changed my entire diet, including my son’s, and some other close family. I feel that we all have a habit of telling eachother buying certain things is acceptable when it is really not. I think that “we all” need some kind of slap in the face everyonce in a while. I just hope that the people that called you ” unnecessarily hurtful, with the “fat cow bit” Just need to understand that the only reason it hurts is because we know it is true.

**It would be cool if that man actually does read these**

  30. Suzanne

Oh yeah, and the part about someone insulting you that your daughter was filming this. I feel that you have every right to teach your daughter anything that you feel is right. I am sure that since you are not only being insulting you actually explain why with the medical process, as well as tell people exactly what they are doing to themselves. It’s not mean it is the truth. Being sensitive to a fat persons feelings all the time is only enabling them further into their path of shame and self destruction.
