One More Oprah Fat Loss Tip That Makes Her (and you) Fat
In 2006, I sent out a nationwide media release insisting that Oprah’s fat-loss methods – which included walking as her primary exercise – were actually making her fat. Even worse, they were making the millions of Americans following her lead fat too.
Fact is, if you want lean, sexy muscle (at any age), walking is not sufficient exercise.
Sure, walking is better than no exercise at all. But it’s not going to help you burn the fat you need to burn in order to feel great and get noticed. Nobody ever walked themselves out of the Fat Cow Hall of Fame. I didn’t… and neither has Oprah.
When it comes to exercise, the old adage holds true: "No pain, no gain." Why? Because you need to force the body to produce a family of fat-burning, beer-belly-melting compounds known as catecholamines. When released, these weapons of fat destruction bind metabolic receptors on the outer membrane of fat cells, causing them to be eradicated via thermogenesis and lypolysis. (That’s just a fancy way to say that the fat cells are being demolished.)
Getting rid of fat with exercise happens only when you attain 60 to 80 percent of your max heart rate. If you’ve forgotten how to do the calculation, here it is: 220 minus your age times .60 equals your maximum target heart rate.
Let me know what your exercise routine is or isn’t. What’s your favorite part about it, least favorite? Lemme know you’re alive!

Hi Shane, Let me know when your book is published.
Topics I would like to see discussed.
1. the reason men or women become DOCTORS? Is it to help people OR just to earn a good living?
2. Why are so many people left on prescription medications for years. Either with little or no change to their problem?
3.When people have a heart attack, when they find there is excessive blockage in an artery, why do they put in a balloon OR Stent, because they must know that if the person does not change their life style or what they eat, evetually this does not work. Then we are back to square ONE!
4. What makes water build up in a persons lung, which they call congestive heart failure?
5. Why would a psychologist, tell a person when they have Sleep Apnea, well there are 2 , psychiatrists here, make an appointment with them
Since when do psychotic pills have anything to do with not sleeping??
6. Governments should not be allowed
to get kick backs, from companies
manufacturing pills.Doctors should have to report if salesmen offer $$$
for giving certain pills to their clients. This is FRAUD!
Oh so many topics, need discussing.
Best of Luck with you endeavors.

Hello, I do not know where to ask these questions…
Is your AM-PM Fat Loss Discovery Program safe while nursing?
I am not trying to get pregnant, but we do not use birth control, so if I were to become pregnant would there be any problems from taking the product?
Thanks, Robin

Not for anyone who is pregnant.

Would use while breast feeding be okay?
By my quick look at most of the ingredients they seem to all be safe and natural foods we could eat….what do you think?
Thanks again!

Hi Shane,
For exercising I do lots of push-ups (30 or more..my goal is 100), crunches, dumbells for arms and lunges for legs…that’s it. Should probably do more cardio but I already have a fast metabolism.
I eat healthy but not an extremist..no restrictions except I avoid the fake stuff like the plague! I eat lots of real butter & real honey…you know the stuff our brains crave!
Is that what you wanted to know?

Hi Shane,
I am fat and 51 years old. For the last 15 years I haven’t been able to
eradicate the belly fat and all the other fat that goes with it.
I tried the gym but find I give up on that before I see any results.
I have just ordered your AM/PM package for weight loss and I am expecting to finally break the fat cycle and add more life to my life
I enjoy reading your posts and articles. Very inspiring! I intend to set up a blog when I start your program that shows my daily progress over the 90 days. I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes.

Everything you say sounds good but I am torn. Mercola says you must know your type either carb or protene? Sears says his pace exercis program is best? It seems there many with different opinions on what is right. There is so much info out there that the odds are that what ever one listens to will probablly be wrong???? For sure all the experts can’t be right. Thanks for listening.

I am testing the effectiveness of Dr. Al Sears PACE program. He bases his findings on how people functioned before treadmills and aerobics classes in response to their environment. I do no more than 20 min. of high intensity interval training every other day first thing in the morning, staying within my target heart rate zone and then recovering to the bottom of my heart rate zone. I use a trampoline, a leg workout, sprints etc. on different days.
I have found if I adhere to a clean diet, as taught by Shane, the pounds come off relatively easy.
I know Shane advocates 45 min. of training and when I did that the pounds melted away, but I was intrigued by Dr. Sears and I think Shane has worked with him before. (Correct my if I am wrong.)

@Everyone, Thanks for the feedback. The questions and ideas are well thought out here! My upcoming, Over-The-Counter Natural Cures will cover most of the topics.
@Lora, I like the simplicity of your exercise. Great work.
@Phil, Congrats on fighting fat right back with the AM-PM Package. Use your support line! You’ll see great results.
@Cali, Yes, Al Sears is a friend of mine. The Pace program is great. For basic health, you just need to get your heart rate up to the target range we teach, every other day. Of course, my 45 minute routine was for serious muscle – competition type.
@Henry, Why torn? Just apply what you learn, stick to what works. Plain and simple.

Hi Shane,
I’ve been reading your site for some time…love the way you put it out there: no la-lee gagging around things. Just wanted to say a few things about my hubby. He was having a difficult time lately healthwise and it was driving me crazy: since I eat healthy: Weston A. Price member, he would bring home crap and there I was reading him his rights. It was change or I was out…was tired of yoo-yooing around with good and bad foods. He recently retired at 51 years old [not that he wanted too, GM did]…was taking waaaayy too many prescription drugs: Zocor, pain killers, Exedrin, protonix, ..you get the picture. I seen the changes it did to his body: made him fat, cranky and add to the mix prostate problems. He’d go to our regular doctor and all he got was more pills: antibiotics, anti-inflamatories…but nothing was working [which is what I told him would happen]. I finally said you need to change things up and luckily he agreed. I made an appointment with Dr. Darren Schmidt at the NHCAA [they do Nutritional Response testing-aka muscle testing]. He asked hubby if he had his gall bladder removed….”No!” “why?”. Well, it wasn’t working…was tested for what supplements (Standard Process-made w/whole organic food) would help out and the quantity he would need to take…196 of one and 80 of another all within a week.[that amount was greatly reduced the following week, just needed to get it jump started again: damn Zocor] Guess what…it worked..a few weeks later he also found that he has gout and we’re working on correcting the prostate problems too [aching balls and pains inside legs].
The fantastic part about all this…he’s gone from 210 lbs to 178 and dropped the Zocor and Protonix!! They have you keep track of the food you eat on a weekly basis….carbs need to be greatly reduced and bamm….weight lose. I’m soo happy that he’s agreeing to all this…he actually cleaned out the pantry and gave the shit away. I’m soo proud of him and glad that he can enjoy his retirement with health and vigor…not achey and in constant pain.
What’s your take on Nutritional Response Testing? They have a youtube video out….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze4ivvLLvLw
Keep up the great work

Thanks, Shane for all your work in getting the word out with your insight & expertise! My exercise routine is: 30 – 40 mins. cardio 5 – 6 times a wk (walking/jogging up & down our hilly neighborhood, or walking on a Nordic track, or using videos). I also lift weights 4 times/wk 15-30 mins/day, focusing on 2 different muscle groups per day. Exercise helps me to de-stress & stay in shape. My favorite is weight training, because it gives me confidence. I’m 50 years old, have had 11 children, & am still going strong! If I can do it, anyone can!

@Taffy, Great job on the weight training! So vital. Nothing confers health more than muscles! And yes, even women need them.

Shane,
In “The Athlete’s Deadly Mistake” you remind us not to fall for the theory that lots of carbs (and the sugars that go with them) is the way to fuel and refuel our bodies when exercising or competing.
I’m 51 and still very athletic. In addition to hitting the gym every morning, I run, golf, officiate basketball, and ride my road bike 1-2 hours 3-4 times a week. While on a 50 mile bike ride it’s important for me to stay hydrated and fueled for the effort. There are a lot of drink mixes (Accelerade, Cytomax, Endurox, etc) and energy bars (Detour, Powerbar, Cliff Bar, etc) marketed to high-end bikers and I’ve used them all. But you’ve got me thinking that, although they contain proteins and amino acids, perhaps the carb and sugar content is too high.
Is that true? If so, can you recommend energy drinks, energy gels, and energy bars that have the proper (or at least better) mix and type of proteins & amino acids but are low in sugars? Also, I often use whey protein mixes as a post-ride muscle re-builder. Can you tell me what to look for in a whey protein mix/recovery mix? (Or would your FX whey do the trick?)
I’m looking for the most effective and efficient supplements to help me be the best biker I can be. Any advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
