Most every drug sold today has a safer, natural-based predecessor. That single fact inspired me to write Over-The-Counter Natural Cures. And ever since, readers have been enjoying inexpensive, natural medicine that their doctors would have never been able to tell them about!
For example, pseudoephedrine is an ingredient found in over-the-counter cough syrup. It is a knock-off of the active ingredients found in “Mormon tea.” Naturally-occurring, Mormon tea can be safely used as a cough suppressant. Today however, it’s banned, while pseudoephedrine remains on the shelves of every corner grocery store in America. In 2004, The Annals of Emergency Medicine noted that pseudoephedrine is so damaging to the heart that it can elicit a heart attack among users – even healthy ones.
Aspirin – the drug that your doctor tells you to take EVERYDAY – is a knock-off of the active ingredient found in white willow bark. The side effects of Aspirin are so severe that they can cause a higher death rate relative to the populations who do not take it. Rarely brought to the attention of users, aspirin depletes the body of the essential nutrient folate…White willow bark is virtually unknown yet remains a safe and effective alternative to Aspirin for pain relief and any purported cardiovascular benefits.
The cover-up gets worse…
5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone, an anti-cancer drug used among those who suffer from leukemia, is a knock-off of the active ingredient found in the roots of Chinese skullcap (Scuterllaria baicalensis). Chinese skullcap is a safe and effective natural cancer fighter that induces cell suicide (apoptosis) among leukemia-derived cancer cells. Meanwhile, the prescription knock-off is overtly toxic and has a very low success rate.
Drug companies and medical doctors obfuscate these historical facts. They like patients to think that drugs are intuitively invented out of thin air courtesy of chemistry masterminds. This helps foster the very profitable belief that drugs are the only option for health.
Understanding that natural medicine guides drug development will help you better understand why most people don’t know about “The immortality herb.” …Until now!
I first heard of the immortality herb as a young chemist having an informal talk with senior chemists. Apparently, a new family of natural compounds were being discovered in an herb known as jiaogulan for their ability to increase lifespan.
It was found that the herb could halt 4 known causes of premature aging.
#1 Protect your DNA
One of the most toxic substances produced by the body is O2, technically known as superoxide. It’s deployed by the immune system to kill invading biological nasties and deleteriously produced as a byproduct of cellular energy production, most notably during exercise.
Because superoxide is so toxic, all organisms living with it contain a natural O2 scavenger known as superoxide dismutase. The more you have the slower you age. In 2009, Phytomedicine highlighted research showing that jiaogulan worked to boost the production of the 02 scavenger, thereby protecting the DNA as well as the heart from free radical damage.
#2 Boost Nitric oxide
Nitric oxide improves circulation of nutrients and oxygen among the 100,000 miles of arteries, veins and capillaries. When produced it relaxes the walls so blood flow is increased and blood pressure controlled. In 1999 Vanderbilt University wrote that their research results “demonstrate that jiaogulan stimulates nitric oxide release and that this may be one mechanism whereby this herbal medicine elicits its many therapeutic effects.”
#3 Increase Insulin sensitivity
Today, high insulin is the chief cause behind obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer and you’ve read all my blabber about how insidious it can be when we have too much. To lower it, you must increase your insulin sensitivity. This lowers blood sugar and boosts energy. In 2009, The Journal of Medicinal Food found that jiaogulan increases insulin sensitivity better than the risky, diabetes drug Avandia!
#4 Ensure apoptosis among cancerous cells
In 2007 China Medical University found that the active ingredients in jiaogulan caused an influx of calcium among cancerous cells, causing them to eradicate themselves from the human body in response to jiogolan consumption!
These life extending properties may be new to you, but not to the Chinese…Jiaogulan was First written about in 1406…and still to this day it is used as a soothing tea by anyone who wants to live young.
That’s a lot of sugar! The more you take in, the fatter you get. And it doesn’t matter if it’s served in a pretty can – labeled as “organic” – at Whole Foods.
Sugar intake is the worst thing you can do for your health. If it’s not putting you into The Fat Cow Hall of Fame (I’m an ex-member), it’s messing up your hormone balance and putting you at risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In Over-The-Counter Natural Cures I said sugar consumption was “suicide in slow motion.”
To stop the sugar assault, I designed Cinnergy. It’s a phenomenal way to help curb the threat…It works by forcing your body to remove sugar from the blood ultra-fast. The longer sugar is in the bloodstream, the more damage it does…But, you can’t continually suck down sugar and expect Cinnergy to help you.
Getting people to quit energy drinks isn’t realistic. Let’s face it, they’re awesome! And the ones with the worst ingredients are usually the best…Hell, the first drink that comes with a warning label is going to be a hit! Therefore, I’ll be featuring safe alternatives in an upcoming episode of PC Reality TV. Sign up for my Natural Cures Watchdog (upper right) to get this FREE episode!
If you have questions about sugar, post them in the comments section below.

Mom of six gets back into her skinny jeans with Hormone Intelligence Therapy!
If you want to lose weight, you need to calculate your “ideal weight.” This is a measurement based on a perfect balance of body fat and muscle. It will give you something to aim for and help you monitor muscle growth over time, which is the most important measure of any fat loss effort. That’s because muscle slows the metabolic aging process by quelling high blood sugar. Therefore, the more you have, the slower you age.
If you’re currently not overweight, this trick will not work! It’s only designed for people who are currently lugging around “too much weight.”

To get started, measure your body fat percentage. If you don’t want to go to a local gym to get it done, you can order the Acczilla Personal Body Fat Tester Kit, or the EatSmart Precision GetFit Digital Body Fat Scale from amazon.com.
Once you have your body fat percentage, convert that to pounds. For instance, at my heaviest, I was 205 pounds and 30% body fat. That meant I was lugging around 61.5 pounds of fat (205 x .30).
Your body fat %:
Total pounds of fat:
After figuring out how many pounds of fat you have, cut that number in half. I call this little trick, “cutting the fat in half.” It’s the quickest way to estimate your target weight because it won’t eliminate too much fat – which is essential for proper hormone balance – and will make room for the preservation and growth of muscle on your frame.
After cutting the fat in half, subtract it from your total body weight and that’s your “ideal weight.” My total fat was 61.5 pounds. Cutting that fat in half yielded 30.75 pounds, or 31 rounded up. Therefore, my ideal weight turned out to be 174 pounds (205 – 31).
Your fat cut in half =
Your ideal weight = (Your current weight) – (Your fat cut in half) =
Your Best Body
The obvious flaw here is that your calculated “ideal weight” is just an estimate. It may or may not grant you with your “best body” because it doesn’t predict how much fat will be lost or muscle gained as you reach your target.
Your “best weight” is a perfect balance of fat and muscle. Men should aim for 11% – 15% body fat, women 15% – 20%. And as you lose fat in 2012, use your body fat % to gauge the growth of muscle, which is a direct measurement of how healthy you really are. To do this, calculate your “lean body mass.”
Lean Body Mass
Lean body mass is the weight of your bones, water, glycogen, skin, hair, organs and muscle – everything but fat. To obtain lean body mass, subtract your total pounds of fat from your body weight. At 205 pounds and 30% body fat, my lean body mass was 143.5 (205 – 61.5).
Your lean body mass = (Current weight) – (Total pounds of fat) =
How Much Muscle Did You Gain?
Now, here’s the fun part. Over time, calculate how much muscle you have put on (or lost) by subtracting your starting lean body mass from your current lean body mass.
My starting lean body mass was 143.5 pounds. After reaching 175 pounds, my body fat percentage was 11%. Therefore, my new lean body mass was 156 pounds. Subtracting my previous lean mass of 143.5, showed that I gained 12.5 pounds of muscle (156 – 143.5)…That was a 90 day period.
Your starting lean body mass:
Your current lean body mass:
Muscle gained = (Current lean body mass) – (Starting lean body mass) =
Don’t Be Deceived
Numbers can be deceiving. And so are fad diets. If you want perfect health, start by identifying your ideal weight. Then, whatever path you choose in your fat loss endeavors, make sure it’s taking you to your best body weight, rather than a perceived body weight based on the air-brushed images of Hollywood and roided-out bodybuilding gurus. When it comes to health, only measurable results keep us living young, not weight loss hype.

Your body produces its own “weapon of fat destruction.” More than helping you fit into your skinny jeans, it can also ward off Type 2 diabetes and boost your energy libido! However, most people don’t know how to harness this lifesaving hormone. Fortunately, it’s as simple as learning when to eat, and what not to drink…
Bad Blood
Joan was scheduled for what was supposed to be a routine blood test, but it turned out to be one of the biggest turning points in her life. At 39 years old, she was striving to stay on top of her career. As an accountant, she worked long hours. Travel was a regular part of her work schedule and weekly meetings with clients were mandatory. Over time, she wasn’t able to keep up. Her energy had evaporated. That’s when she scheduled her doctor’s appointment.
Walking into the sterile environment of her family doctor, she wondered if it would help. “Would he find something wrong or suggest I choke down some sleeping pills or antidepressants?” she wondered. “Maybe I just need a vacation.”
A blood test revealed that Joan had “bad blood” courtesy of high blood sugar, which was 150mg/dL. Anything above 125mg/dL is considered Type 2 diabetes or, more accurately, “insulin resistance.” Normal is 85 to 95mg/dL. When blood sugar rises, the body is unable to efficiently produce its energizing molecule ATP. And when ATP function declines, so does energy and libido.
Best Defense against Bad Blood
One of the best defenses against bad blood is a hormone known as glucagon. This is the “I can’t wait to wear a bathing suit” hormone. When released by the pancreas it works double-time to control blood sugar, while activating fat metabolism and keeping heart disease and cancer at bay – two more diseases linked closely to high blood sugar.
As the natural enemy to Type 2 diabetes, glucagon is your No. 1 defense against the pandemic killer. More exciting, you don’t need a prescription to have it. As the most effective pharmacy in the world, your body can make glucagon if you adhere to two simple habits:
1. Eat only three meals per day, five hours apart
2. Abstain from sugary sodas and juice
Eating and Drinking Redefined
Forget “small meals throughout the day.” A good eating schedule to stick to is 7 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. About 50 percent of your meals should consist of foods that do not give rise to bad blood – healthy fats from grass-fed beef, avocado, seeds, nuts, whole eggs, and coconut oil.
Foods that taste sweet like yoghurt and anything served out of a box or fast food window are off the list. Each of these crush glucagon production, while giving rise to “Thunder Thighs.”
Adding various spices like cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric and a plethora of herbs to your meals as discussed in my book, Over-The-Counter Natural Cures, can further help by making you feel more satiated to shut down snack cravings.
By consuming only three meals per day, you’re tapping into your innate ability to manufacture the lifesaving hormone. In contrast, when you divide your meals with snacks, your body responds with a fat-storing hormone known as insulin, which crushes glucagon production. As a result, weight gain ensues and blood sugar goes haywire … then everything goes downhill from there.
Safe Taste Certified: Watch Out For Protein Powders!
Watch what you drink! Studies show that even one sugary soda per day leads to overt obesity and diabetes in the years to come. Juice is no exception whatsoever and neither are sport drinks or protein powders loaded with sugar or artificial flavors!
Safe liquids are those that don’t choke out glucagon production such as water, organic coffee (real cream only) and tea such as yerba mate and Inca tea. You can even “splurge without suffering from the fat surge” by drinking Zevia Brand Soda and Our Daily Red Wine!
No Wimps Allowed!
Exercise can help glucagon production too. But it can’t be the kind of wimpy, no sweat exercise that might be fitting for a girl scout. You really have to get your heart rate up to at least 60% of its threshold during your routine ((220-age)*.60) and put your muscles under stress! Crossfit is best for this.
The good news is that if you hit this mark several times during your exercise bouts, you can go to the gym less. Typically, three times per week for the busy professional works great, as long as you are sticking to my eating frequency above. Just ask Joan.
The Energy and Libido Burst
Once she learned of her bad blood and its natural enemy glucagon, Joan took charge of her health by harnessing the power of her internal pharmacy. She stopped snacking and avoided the juices and sodas offered at her company meetings. In a matter of weeks, her thinking became clearer. Getting out of bed in the morning was easier than ever. Her energy rebounded, even in the bedroom.
At her follow-up appointment two weeks later, her blood sugar dropped to 95mg/dL. Today, she tackles her work day like she did in her 20s – with determination, focus, and enthusiasm that lasts all day long.

Here is another way to get fat long term; Feed your face 4-6 times daily (graze). I was convinced at the word “graze” and its instant portrayal of fat farm animals. But this fails to deter fit hopefuls.
The grazing myth grew from the erroneous idea that eating boosts metabolism. And it does. It’s called diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT). I learned about it in 9th grade, along with all the other outdated, simple-minded personal training drab found in muscle magazines. After three meals per day, the metabolic effect of DIT diminishes. Duh. My 5-year old calls it “eating too often.”
With respect to controlling weight, excessive meals only work for people who are severely restricting calories, addicted to exercise, or injecting steroids like a ‘roided out bodybuilder. These three actions counter the fat inflating side effects of “eating too much” because they force the body to compensate via starvation, energy output, or hormones, respectively. But anyone else adhering to the multi-meal myth is doomed, as proven with post-meal blood tests, DNA studies and the real-life outcomes of being better equipped to kick ass athletically.
After a week or two of grazing, the body adapts to meal overload by pumping out the fat storing hormone insulin while simultaneously lowering fat crushing hormones like glucagon, testosterone and human growth hormone (hGH). This is a metabolic nightmare for people who dream about looking good naked.
Starting a career in figure competitions, my wife Lea-Ann and mom of two dabbled in the dogma. She soon learned about weight gain rebound, what bodybuilding cronies refer to as post competition bloat…

In contrast, studies on low meal frequency, where food intake is restricted to about every 5 hours, show that our DNA function is better preserved. The outcome is astounding because it leads to the exact opposite of multi-meal intake – low insulin and high amounts of the fat crushing, muscle building hormones glucagon, testosterone and hGH. And that’s a metabolic dream come true…The benefits can be verified in the real world with positive changes in lean body mass and increased athletic performance.
Applying low meal frequency to her training and supplement protocol, Lea-Ann was able to experience the benefits by winning the Arnold Amateur in 2009, without the nasty rebound. Sticking to the easy-to-follow protocol, she carries the same great physique today, with little sacrifice.
Many have used the minimal-meal principles to transform their physique, fast, like 90 days fast.

They won’t be on the cover of Men’s Health, but that’s not the point. They’re fit, healthy, and their lives no longer revolve around constant weight gain and spiraling health.
To verify the negative outcomes of the multi-meal myth first hand, attend a bodybuilding event where the belief runs deep. Pay attention to the ex-participants.
Scurrying around in tight shirts, rolled up sleeves, and pants that won’t let go of their thighs to save their life, they’re traditionally overweight, especially in the gut and chest area where multi-meal insulin overload “weighs heavy.” It usually gives rise to the spare tire hanging form the waist and “moobs” slung low from the chest, now popularized by famed ‘roider and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The cultural dogma among the bodybuilding community and its long term side-effect of obesity and accelerated aging is a poignant reminder that muscles and health don’t always go hand in hand, and that small meals throughout the day don’t spark metabolism.
