Cinnamon: Mastering a Century Old Anti-Aging Cure

One of the most important points of my book, Over-The-Counter Natural Cures, was that if blood sugar goes unchecked, it can devastate the entire body. And if you’re on “The Pill,” drinking “Vitamin Water,” swallowing anti-depressants, adhering to a fad-diet, or even abstaining from exercise, then your blood sugar may be diminishing your quality of life at best, or decreasing your lifespan at worst.
Everything from hearing and vision to sexual function, mental health, and sleep are affected by high blood sugar levels. It’s the leading cause of ADHD, blindness, amputations and kidney failure. It can triple the risk for heart attack and stroke. This highly underrated, insidious, and deadly disorder affects an estimated 25 percent of the population and is growing in prevalence. Looking at hospital patients, The New York Times underscored the risks of “bad blood” stating that, “No matter what the illness, people in hospital intensive care units tend to have elevated blood sugar levels.”
Blood Sugar Meds Decreasing Lifespan
Commonly prescribed meds are being used ravenously to curb the existing, high blood sugar epidemic, but aren’t helping. While they might lower blood sugar levels by 15 percent to 20 percent, this effect doesn’t translate into health. Quite the opposite, this drop in blood sugar results in early death!
In a press release issued by the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. government alerted the public about the hypoglycemic risk: “Intensively targeting blood sugar [with hypoglycemics] to near-normal levels in adults with Type II diabetes at especially high risk for heart attack and stroke does not significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as fatal or nonfatal heart attacks or stroke, but increases risk of death, compared to standard treatment.”
One Cure for Weight Gain, Heart Disease and Pre-Mature Wrinkles?
Using natural product screening, chemists have rediscovered the Century old, anti-aging cure that can now serve as a blockbuster diabetes drug. It successfully lowers blood sugar, triglycerides, and A1C levels while increasing insulin sensitivity—and without a single negative side effect. This leads to weight management, heart disease avoidance and even protection from pre-mature wrinkling. When compared clinically to commonly used anti-diabetic drugs such as metformin, it outperforms.
Such a discovery is like striking medicinal gold. This drug is commonly known as cinnamon! Just as the simple act of supplementing lemon juice saved our ancestors from the deadly scourge of scurvy, cinnamon is positioned to save modern society from the Type II diabetes threat.
The easiest way to harness the benefits of cinnamon is to buy it organically and use it before meals three times per day. The two main types of cinnamon are Cinnamomum cassia (sometimes labeled Saigon cinnamon) and Cinnamomum verum (sometimes labeled Ceylon cinnamon). Both are the common forms used in the studies and are readily available on grocery shelves.
Mastering The Anti-Aging Cure
To master the anti-aging cure, I used state-of-the-art chemistry methods to find the best cinnamon product – one that carried nature’s full spectrum of naturally occurring actives without any adulterants like heavy metals and fillers. I showed in Over-The-Counter Natural Cures that Spring Valley brand cinnamon fit the bill. It sold for about eight dollars per bottle at Walmart.
Since then, select Spring Valley products have been adulterated with the various compounds that have proven to be dangerous, as I previous wrote about on my blog. And further testing on select cinnamon products from Whole Foods (image above) has shown that even the most expensive products are void of naturally occurring ingredients that are mandatory for blood sugar control, namely cinnamaldehyde – an important, fat-soluble, active ingredient found naturally in cinnamon!
The Lead Anti-Aging Compound Goes Missing
In animal and human studies, cinnamaldehyde has shown “exciting anti-diabetic efficacy.” In their research studies, professors of medicine and clinical nutrition Dr. Vijai K. Pasupuleti and Dr. Anderson, showed that the medicinal power of cinnamaldehyde in its whole herb context was not only a powerful anti-oxidant but also a safe and effective compound for controlling blood sugar.
Despite the importance of cinnamaldehyde, select companies are removing it from their capsules by performing water-extraction methods on cinnamon. Since cinnamaldehyde is fat soluble, the medicinal ingredient is left behind as waste. Such extraction methods are performed as a means of garnering some type of a marketing advantage over competitors.
But in reality, it only produces and inferior counterpart to Mother Nature. This lab test proves it, showing 0% cinnamaldehyde in a popular product sold as a “patented” blend of cinnamon (It’s not New Chapter). (Notice that I also tested for lead, just to be safe, as it has shown up in nutritional supplements previously!)

Nothing slows the aging process better than controlling blood sugar with cinnamon. But most people buying it in pill form are not harnessing this century-old, anti-aging cure. To learn how to choose the best products for your family, invest $10 and purchase Over-The-Counter Natural Cures, found anywhere books are sold.

Thanks, Shane! I know who I can look to for the answers to keep myself healthy and looking good. Keep doing what you’re doing.

I already purchased your book. Does this website indicate that I have to purchase a new book from you every few months in order to keep up or is there another way? I do not do Twitter, Facebook or any other kind of “blog”.
Anthony Sanchez 9:36 pm on May 12, 2011
Hi shane. Another good blog story. You kinda forgot to tell us what to do. Is sun valley now no good? Is there something to replace it with? What exactly should we do?
Chris 11:36 pm on May 12, 2011
As usual, the article is nothing short of excellent and I do have the book and it too is what one would regard as priceless (my apologies to mastercard)
The People's Chemist 11:53 pm on May 12, 2011
Thanks Chris!
Rebekah 11:38 pm on May 12, 2011
Yes! Thank you, Anthony! Based on your earlier blog warning about chromium picolinate, how do I know if the Spring Valley Cinnamon I currently have is OK? The only other ingredients listed are gelatin, silica and vegetable magnesium stearate. That last one doesn’t sound good. What now do we need to buy? Thanks for your help!
The People's Chemist 11:52 pm on May 12, 2011
Thanks for your feedback. The advice still remains exactly the same as written in OTC Natural Cures. This article is just a reminder that you have to select the right product, not just look for the name of the herb or brand mentioned. It also underscores the fact that supplements change over time, and I’m actively testing them and offering this continuing education for free. So keep checking back! – Live Young!

I have been using your recs per the OTC Natural Cures and feel great – it took about 30 days and then it was like the electricity came on. Of course, eating better (3 meals a day 5 hours apart) and cutting way down on the alcohol helped as well.
I have been drinking Yerba Mate (same brand you recommend) every day – I ran across the following this evening talking about the negative effects of Yerba. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Shane, those of us that own the book and see that you’ve recommended Spring Valley brand and then say that it’s had some problems are still in the dark about which cinnamon to order.
Can you please clarify? Thanks, Jean

We have purchased Spring Valley cinnamon as recommended in your book , are you now saying this product is adulterated and not suitable? Which brand can you now recommend?
cheers julie in Australia
Andrea 2:25 am on May 13, 2011
I have just been buying bulk cinnamon at my co-op and taking it before meals. Does this work ok?
Sally 10:19 am on May 13, 2011
Try Young Living Essential OIls Cinnamin Bark oil, Shane – their products are carefully extracted & unadulterated. They use gas chromatography to ensure what is in their products. It tastes delicious too
Christian 12:35 pm on May 13, 2011
Shane, pulled out my copy of OTC Natural Cures and it recommends Spring Valley. In this post you rescind that recommendation. What do you now recommend that contains the correct amount of cinnamaldehyde?
The People's Chemist 2:27 pm on May 13, 2011
Please see comments above. I did not rescind anything.
candace 5:05 pm on May 13, 2011

I have been taking spring valley cinnamon (without cromium)2 x daily, since Shane’s book came out. I no longer use any sugars.(except stevia and agave) My glucose went from 121 to 96, and I no longer look for any sweets. eating 3 meals 5 hrs apart, and lost 6 lbs. Feeling great!
The People's Chemist 4:03 pm on May 17, 2011
This is FANTASTIC! Thanks so much for sharing. Way to take charge of your health. How have you been feeling?
Claire 4:53 pm on June 20, 2011
I actually have a bottle of the Gaia brand pictured above. It says it has Total Cinnamaldehydes of 33mg. Is this brand OK?
Dave 2:37 am on June 21, 2011
I was checking out Wal-Mart for the Spring Valley Cinnamon and all they have is the stuff laced with Chromium.
If you can’t find Spring Valley without Chromium are there alternative brands that are suitable?
Thanks
Michael 3:43 am on June 21, 2011
Shane, thanks for looking out for us all and getting us the right information, as opposed to what we’re told by mainstream medicine.
The People's Chemist 2:10 pm on June 21, 2011
You’re welcome Michael. Thanks for being such a great fan!
Lois 12:49 pm on June 21, 2011
Shane,
Have you tried or tested any products from Vitality Works in NM? They have great Stevia.
I just checked and they have cinnamon Capsules.
The People's Chemist 2:08 pm on June 21, 2011
Looks like a “liquid extract.” Again, this type of extraction discounts the entire array of benefits associated with
whole herb, medicinal cinnamon.
Jack 1:44 pm on June 21, 2011
My bottle of Spring Valley Cinnamon says it has Chromium Amino Acid Chelate.
Good or bad?
The People's Chemist 2:18 pm on June 21, 2011
It’s here! Cinnergy! This is my pre-release offer of a cinnamon AND milk thistle product I’ve been working on since supplement trends took a turn for the worst. Scroll to bottom at http://thepeopleschemist.com/store/
Chuck 2:23 pm on June 21, 2011
What are the “adulterated compounds that have proven to be dangerous” in the Spring Valley brand of cinnamon? Why would you recommend this product if that is the case?
The People's Chemist 2:37 pm on June 21, 2011
@Chuck, follow the link here: http://thepeopleschemist.com/cinnamon-supplements-prove-dangerous/
mike 4:28 pm on June 21, 2011
Shane, have you tested the “Now” vitamin products? namely the cinn. for its pureity,& cinnamaldehyde? Thanks for all you do Shane & rock on brother!!
Lois 7:20 pm on June 21, 2011
Vitality Works has a liquid gel cap. And a fresh ground cinnamon.
Matt 3:09 pm on July 12, 2011
Shane. I tried to find spring valley cinnamon at Walmart, but couldn’t find it without chromium. I’m really looking for cinnamon to help my girlfriend and I abolish belly fat. Can you suggest another product. I brought a cinnamon supplement made by Nature’s Way, but I wanted to check with you before I started taking it.
P.s. thanks for everything. I use your protein shake and AM and PM deit pills.
Jim 6:17 pm on September 5, 2011
Would there be an added benefit to taking Cinergy with or before a post workout meal, like say Whey Advanced?
The People's Chemist 7:31 pm on September 5, 2011
No. It has a cumulative effect, so a non-diabetic can easily get benefit taking once per day or even every other day.
