You Can’t Lose Fat (Or Build Muscle) Without Knowing This!

To master hunger—and break free from obesity and hormonal ignorance— you need to understand that your body has four hunger signals. Only one of them indicates a true need for food! 


This is one of the first lessons we teach our kids! Otherwise, they would constantly nag us to eat. As they learn what real hunger is and what it’s not, they begin to self regulate. And that’s the key to living young—having the awareness to not eat so f@#cking much! 

 

Sadly, most adults today struggle with eating patterns that began in childhood—not from genetics, but from learned behavior, parents modeling out-of-control eating habits, and lack of hunger awareness. When you learn to recognize the four hunger signals, you can differentiate them. This allows you to stop reacting to cravings and start controlling your eating. That’s the shift everyone needs to make to live young! 

Knowing how to discern hunger signals is more important than counting calories and tracking macros. This is because no matter what or how you eat, your body will always tell you it’s hungry. Learning what each hunger signal means also protects you from chasing fad diets—keto, caveman, carnivore, intermittent fasting, water fasting, juice fasting, or anything else that promises control without teaching the mindset behind it.

Here’s the most important thing to know: for every 24 hours in a day, you’re likely going to be hungry for 6 total hours. It’s a fact of life for anyone trying not to become fatter year after. 

 

Learning how to embrace hunger is the greatest, most effective thing you can do to protect health and longevity, look younger, and fight off disease! 

 

Most people see hunger as a problem and react to it. They can’t sit with it. And that’s fueling their inability to burn fat. It’s the primary reason their hormones are wrecked.

Proper Eating Frequency

To live young, simply eat 3 meals a day—no sugar, no snacking, no drinking calories (cut out smoothies and limit protein powders to once a week, if a all)—and space those meals 5–7 hours apart. That’s the structure. Anything outside of it—no matter what the scale says—does not prime the body for lasting fat loss or an optimal strength-to-weight ratio.


The 5-7 between meals are known as mini-fasting windows. Mastering the four hunger signals—and learning to sit with real hunger inside those mini-fasting windows—is what changes everything. That’s where fat loss happens, along with muscle growth. Energy stabilizes and your body starts working for you rather than against you. Instead of endlessly dieting, you’re living young because the body is better able to optimize estrogen, testosterone, insulin, glucagon and so much more!

 

Mini-fasting windows work because they give your body time to recover after a meal, especially at the hormonal level. Research on telomeres, autophagy (cellular cleansing), and longevity consistently points to the benefits of time between meals.

A more technical look highlights the profound results of shutting down calorie intake and deserve noting.  The journal Microbial Physiology wrote that: “Hundreds of studies have shown that caloric restriction (CR), reduction of food intake to 30–40% below ad libitum intake levels without malnutrition, while retaining essential nutrients, prevents several chronic degenerative inflammatory diseases by activating autophagy, a degradation process of old proteins and organelles, important for cellular viability and regeneration, and for establishing homeostasis. CR may be the best intervention for slowing ageing, extending lifespan, and delaying the onset of age-related diseases in several species…”

 

In 2024, the highly respected journal Nature Communications, showed a remarkable reduction in aging due to proper caloric restriction (CR) through mini-fasting windows.  They published that, “high-resolution light and electron microscopy indicates that CR reduces beta cell mitophagy [cell recycling and renewal] and increases mitochondria mass, increasing mitochondrial ATP generation [energy production]. Finally, we show that long-term CR delays the onset of beta cell aging and senescence to promote longevity by reducing beta cell turnover. Therefore, CR could be a feasible approach to preserve compromised beta cells during aging and diabetes.”

The 4 Types of Hunger Signals

1. Physical Hunger (The Only One That Matters)

This is real hunger. It builds slowly. You feel it in your stomach—not your head. It sends a clear signal: “It’s time to eat.” This is the signal your body was designed to give you. It happens when your hormones are working correctly. It indicates a genuine need for physical nourishment.

2. Nutritional Hunger (Deficiency Hunger)

You just ate… but now you’re craving more. That’s not hunger—that’s your body asking for missing nutrients. This comes from eating smoothies, protein bars, fast food, and anything else from a box, window, or package.

3. Learned Hunger (Habit Hunger)

This is conditioning. It’s where you say, “I always snack at night.” Or, “I always eat dessert with dinner.” Or, “I always get popcorn at the movies.” There’s no signal from your body—you’re just following a clock, a routine, or even a thought.

4. Hormonal Hunger (The Saboteur)

This one feels urgent and emotional. It comes from taking meds, eating fortified foods (breads), artificial ingredients, or “Pharma Foods” designed to cause addiction, or even doing too much exercise, especially CrossFit and heavy lifting! It’s not hunger—it’s your hormones throwing a tantrum because they’re confused. You don’t need immediate food or a post-workout meal—you need to simply ignore it!
